Designer - What to Look For

Happy Easter everyone!  Hope your break has been restful and lovely.

I still find my way back to a computer even when I am taking a break. : ) ha!

Today I thought I would address a question I get frequently. What do I look for in a designer?

Well, this has evolved over time. I also am using the word 'designer' loosely as that can range from graphic design to illustration, interaction design, VFX and more.  I am naturally attracted to a portfolio and demonstrated work. It could be just one example or several, showing a variety of styles and abilities. The great thing about visual art is you can see it right away. It is simple in that respect.

What you're looking for varies depending upon the medium and eventual marketing/advertising channel.

In addition to demonstrated talent as in a portfolio, I look for other qualities in order to work with a designer for the long-term:

1. Integrity - in word and action

2. Empathy - for others

3. Natural Skill - demonstrated and can be on request

4. Passion - to learn, to grow and to share

Is the individual inspired by the work you are doing or you've invited them to be a part of? Can that person work well with others? Does he or she have internal drive and desire to excel and to make an impact? Can this person appreciate skill and qualities in other people? Is he or she willing to dive in and learn?

A person with great character is more valuable than a roomful of award-winning artists. That individual will learn what is needed. You can have an artist with so much skill but does not contribute to a team effort or is constant competition with others, lowering morale.

A person with integrity and empathy is able to create with others and also to listen and care. He or she is willing to put the other first and that is the kind of person you want on your team, whether you are building a new catalog, website or a rocket ship (would love to do the last one).

A designer who is talented will eventually have some ego about it. This contributes to self-confidence and the drive to do great work. That is natural and necessary. However, that ego must be in check with the other elements such as collaborating with others, doing what is necessary to create excellent work and being considerate. That's where great character comes into play.

When you've found a person with great character and natural skill, that's heavenly. Appreciate them. Dive in.

Characters from Life

I've not read the Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin but I have watched episodes of the television series. My interest came indirectly from a friend who masterfully creates backdrops and scenes for the beautifully crafted show.

Contemporary authors today inspire me by the lives they live and the insight they share. That is what I most drawn to and intrigued by. I had read something George R.R. Martin wrote about writing itself and loved that. He captured subtlety as well as the sensual nature of living.

Three years ago, when I interviewed with the Amazon Kindle team (all elves!) to run their editorial content in the U.S., I had suggested interviewing George R. R. Martin. One of the editors said it would be too difficult as he rarely gave interviews.

After some time however,  to my delight, I see several interviews with him and they are all insightful and interesting to watch and engage.

Here's one with ABC that is terrific:
